We’ve put together a timeline of the work that has been happening since 2019 when the Brighouse Town Deal began, set out where we are now and what’s still to come.

July 2019
Government announces £3.6 billion Towns Fund with the intention of giving places new energy and new life.
September 2019
Government asks towns to develop proposals for Town Deal funding – Brighouse is one of 100 invited.
November 2019
Town Fund prospectus is published by the Government setting out the criteria for funding and how Town Investment Plans should be developed.
Early 2020
Brighouse Town Board becomes responsible for the Town Deal and begins work developing the Town Investment Plan. During this period, stakeholder workshops were held to help inform the development of the Brighouse Vision Masterplan.
July & August 2020
Public consultation on the Brighouse Vision Masterplan with a series of events producing feedback which further shaped the Masterplan which became the basis for the Town Investment Plan.
Late 2020
Preparation of the Town Investment Plan, including a consultation with the community. More >>
February 2021
Town Investment Plan submitted to Government.
June 2021
Government writes to offer Brighouse Town Deal funding for £19.1 million. Calderdale Council agree to accept the funding on behalf of the Town Deal Board. More >>
November 2021
Grant Offer Letter issued to Calderdale Council from Government to support with the development of the project business cases.
Spring 2022
Preparation of the full business cases for each of The Brighouse Deal projects informed by consultation which included an Open Day in the town centre on Saturday 21st May. More >>
Summer 2022
Submission of the full business cases for the agreed projects to Government. Approval was given in October 2022.
Autumn 2022
More detailed designs developed with surveying across the town centre. Consultation with businesses and residents with an opportunity for views to be given at Open Evening on 17 November. More >>
May 2023
Detailed designs and plans for the future of the town centre and market building are revealed with everyone invited to give their feedback during an engagement exercise which ran for several weeks. This included Open Events on Brighouse Open Market and at Brighouse Central Methodist Church, printed packs which were available online, from Brighouse Library, and hand delivered across the town centre. Early 2024
Behind the scenes work to develop and agree the scope and extent of the projects following the engagement exercise of May 2023 and taking into account stakeholder discussions and the views of the Brighouse Town Deal Board.
Projects aim to deliver:
- A more attractive, safer and cleaner town centre so those who shop, visit and enjoy spend longer, spend more and return often
- A better welcome for those arriving on foot or bicycle, by bus or train, while retaining access for those who need to travel by car and improving signage to car parks on the edge of the town centre
- A brand new market housing the traders of today and the entrepreneurs of tomorrow
- A place to come together providing an event and community space at the heart of the town in the historic Thornton Square
- A focus on the future with investment in apprenticeships, skills and training building on the town’s manufacturing heritage

February 2025
