Update: 16 March 2026
Works undertaken in the past few weeks
- One of the most noticeable changes is on Hutchinson Lane, between Gooder Street and Commercial Street, where the road has been paved with the sandstone which will be a familiar sight across the town centre. This route will provide a much more attractive link between the town centre, bus station and Parsonage Lane car park.
- Work on Church Lane to excavate and lay concrete is continuing and will soon be finished with the same sandstone laid on Hutchinson Lane.
- On Commercial Street, excavation works have taken place and the granite kerb installed between Church Lane and Hutchinson Lane showing how the loading and parking bays will be marked in the town centre.
- On Market Street, excavation works to make the area ready for the kerb installation.
- On Thornton Square & Briggate, the large cell of 10 tree pits has been installed. You can see the progress below between the drone shot taken at the end of February and the work on the ground at the moment.
Coming up soon:
- Commercial Street: The team will remove the existing pavement surface and start to install the new pavement finishes. This is made up of two different types of paving slabs and granite. There will also be planting of trees towards the bottom of Hutchinson Lane and outside Czerwicks. The aim is to complete this section prior to Easter.
- Thornton Square / Bethel Street: Work to excavate the tree pits in the west end of Bethel Street (towards Thornton Square) will continue through to Easter with concrete pavement works across the new tree pits in preparation for the new paving to be installed.
- Market Street: The granite kerb will be installed and tree planting will take place. The aim here too is to complete the work before Easter.
- West Park Street: Work will begin on West Park Street to remove the existing footway and kerb.
Looking further ahead:
- The work will continue on Commercial Street with paving installed to the remaining section of the north footway to the junction with Gooder Lane. Esh will begin work on the south side of Commercial Street (from Costa outside Wellington Arcade to Papa John’s) and the western footway of Market Street. While on Briggate and in Thornton Square, the preparation works for paving will continue.

Traffic Regulation Orders
Update: 12 February 2026
Some of the work being delivered by the Brighouse Town Deal’s Town Centre Improvements require new or amended Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs). These are the legal documents which are required to enable the changes to traffic flows and parking.
Between Thursday 12th February and Thursday 5th March, a formal consultation on the Town Deal changes, alongside separate changes proposed by the Council’s review of parking across the borough, is taking place.
This is a legal process managed by Calderdale Council’s Highways team and comments are considered by a Governing Body made up of impartial officers, not directly involved in the scheme.
You can read the proposed TROs and see all the supporting documents at https://new.calderdale.gov.uk/streets-and-transport/transport-initiatives/tro/current-tro/brighouse-town-centre-improvements
You can have your say on the proposed TROs by email to BrighouseTRO@calderdale.gov.uk before the consultation closes on 5th March 2026.

Update: 26 January 2026
- Ongoing now, works on Commercial Street (between Aldi and the junction with Market Street) – this includes drainage works and installation of the tree pits for the new planting.
- The same drainage and installation work is happening on Market Street.
- Preparations are being made for the installation new granite kerbs on the north of Commercial Street between the Hutchinson Lane and Church Street junctions, and the eastern side of Market Street between West Park Street and Commercial Street.
- In early February, work will start in Thornton Square to prepare the cluster of tree pits which will form part of the new look focal point for the town centre.
- Work will also start in early February on Hutchinson Lane (between Commercial Street and the Bus Station) and Church Lane (between Commercial Street and Gooder Lane).
Work is underway
Update: 12 January 2026
- A number of roads have now closed for the construction work to begin – Commercial Street (between Gooder Street and Park Street), Market Street, West Park Street, Bethel Street (from Park Street to Thornton Square), Briggate (from Thornton Square to the Aldi exit) and Canal Street (from Bethel Street to Ship Street).
- Importantly, access will be maintained for deliveries with the Esh Construction team working closely with business and shop owners to ensure this can happen safely and efficiently.
- There will still be access for shoppers, visitors and businesses on foot – the town centre is open for business as normal, even if it will look a bit different.
- Esh Construction has their compound in Daisy Street Car Park. This uses the space that had been in use for the temporary market before it moved back to its permanent home. You’ll see a secure boundary and site cabins on the site but the rest of the car park, and all the businesses around the area, will be open as normal.
- Problems? You can contact Esh by emailing brighousepr@esh.uk.com
